Many people believe that liposuction could be the perfect answer to their weight loss woes. However, the procedure is meant only to help trim and tone small areas of your body. Doctors suggest that "lipo," as it's also called, be performed only on areas that have proved resistant to diet and exercise. The bulk of the weight loss work still has to be done by the patient -- over healthy meals and in the gym.

What Liposuction Is

Liposuction is a medical procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to remove small pockets of unwanted fat from under the skin. The surgery is done using a cannula, a small and hollow steel tube attached to a strong vacuum that removes fat cells. The procedure can be done under local or general anesthesia, after discussion and agreement with your surgeon. It is often completed in one day without an overnight stay in the hospital being necessary.

Small Amounts

An ideal candidate for a liposuction procedure is a person who does not plan on losing any more weight. A great patient is within 10 lbs. of her goal weight and looking only to trim small areas that she hasn't been able to shape through exercise, according to Medical News Today. This candidate should also not plan on fluctuating much in her weight after the procedure. Many patients who have gained weight back after liposuction have found that the fat can deposit strangely after some fat cells have been sucked out.

Not a Diet

Liposuction is not a method for losing weight, nor does it take the place of dietary changes or diligent, disciplined workouts. Rather, it is a technique for removing small and localized fat deposits in hard-to-tone areas, according to Women's Fitness. Your weight should remain stable for six months or more before you arrange to have the liposuction procedure. This is to ensure that you are able to maintain your new, lower numbers on the scale.

Lifestyle

There are only two things that will give you the body you desire -- following a healthy diet of proteins, vegetables and carbohydrates in their least-processed form and getting regular exercise that works your cardiovascular system and builds your muscles. Though procedures such as liposuction can assist in helping you achieve your dream figure, they are complementary therapies, not the main path to achieving optimum health and beauty.
