People often need assistance planning meals based on particular health circumstances and overall health goals. Nutritionists, also known as a dietitians, assist people with making proper food choices. They work in a variety of health care settings. Special training is required to become a nutritionist.

Job Description

A registered dietitian helps supervise meal preparations and plan healthy meals and nutrition programs. Dietitians educate people about proper nutrition and meal planning. Other employment options include conducting research and working as a teacher or journalist. Registered dietitians can choose to specialize in a specific branch of nutrition: clinical dietitian, community dietitian, management dietitian, consultant dietitian, sports nutrition, gerontological nutrition, pediatric nutrition, renal nutrition and oncology nutrition.

Education

A bachelor's degree in food service, nutrition, dietetics or other related subject is the minimum education requirement to become a dietitian. Students will learn about nutrition, foods, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, physiology and institution management. To specialize, additional education is needed. State requirements vary as far as specific required courses.

Work Settings

Nutritionists, or dietitians, may work in a health care setting such as a hospital, convalescent home or doctor's office. State and local facilities employ dietitians in correctional facilities, universities, schools, health departments and other community health locations. Duties include meal preparation, supervision and management, research and education.

Salary

Salary depends on education and work setting. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, dietitians and nutritionists earn an average of $25.59 per hour, or $53,230. Yearly salary varies between $31,460 for special food service workers and $75,100 for those employed in management, scientific and technical consulting services.
