Though some confuse salicylic acid and beta hydroxy acid as two separate ingredients, salicylic acid is actually a form of beta hydroxy acid. As a result, the two are often one-in-the-same when it comes to cosmetic and rejuvenating products. Salicylic acid is typically used for its antiseptic qualities, says the Harvard Health Publication. It's also used to clear acne and treat signs of aging, including wrinkles. If your skin is sensitive, test the product on a small area before using liberally.

Step 1

Wash your face with a facial cleanser and warm water. Pat dry with a clean, soft towel.

Step 2

Apply a thin layer of a product that contains a beta hydroxy acid to the affected area. In addition to salicylic acid, other beta hydroxy acids include glycolic, lactic, trichloroacetic and carbolic acids. Areas prone to wrinkles and fine lines include around the eyes, forehead and frown lines.

Step 3

Repeat this process daily until you've achieved your desired results. Over time, the acid will remove skin on the surface and reveal the newer, firmer skin underneath.

Step 4

Schedule an appointment with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon for a beta hydroxy/salicylic acid-based chemical peel. Chemical peels contain a higher percentage of acid than over-the-counter products and should always be performed by a specialist.
