Reports about vaccine dangers and side effects from a variety of vaccines given to children and adults have become more common, and alleged risks may cause some parents to avoid giving routine vaccines to their children . TD is no exception. The vaccine is given for Tetnus and Diptheria in place of what is reported by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to be a vaccine whose side effects are much riskier, the DTP or Tdap standing for Tetnus, Diptheria and Pertussis. If you or a loved one needs to get a TD vaccine, find out about the side effects before doing so.
Minor Side Effects
The Communicable Disease Control site mentions some minor side effects for the TD vaccine and that it is considered relatively safe. Fever of less than 102.5 degrees Farenheit, headache, swelling of lymph nodes and soreness at the vaccine site are common and disappear within a few days.
Serious Side Effects
Extreme swelling at the vaccine site, serum sickness affecting various bodily organs for a time, neurological changes in nerves of the arm and hand, Guillain Barre Syndrome (which is a temporary paralysis), anaphylactic shock (a severe allergic reaction which can cause hives, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face and throat with the airway being blocked) are all mentioned on the Communicable Disease Control website.
Furthermore, Drugs.com reports other possible severe side effects which should be reported to your doctor. As well as the side effects mentioned above, blistering and sores at the vaccine site, muscle spasms, seizures, persistent dizziness, vomiting, fainting and muscle weakness and joint pain should be mentioned to your doctor.
Who Should Not Receive the TD Vaccine
People who have had prior serious allergic reactions to one or several of the vaccine agents or a prior dose of tetnus toxiod should not receive the TD vaccine, says the Vaccine Information site sponsored by the Immunization Action Coalition.
The Immunization Action Coalition goes on to say that people who are ill should not receive the vaccine or postpone taking the injection. Furthermore, people with immune deficiencies may be advised to avoid the vaccine.
