Basic kicking skills with a soccer ball range from ground kicks to developing your push pass. All of the basic kicking skills can be learned and improved upon by performing kicking drills that specifically pertain to each skill you would like to acquire. While more kicking skills must be acquired by attackers and defenders, goalies must also learn basic kicking skills in order to properly clear the ball.
Outside Foot Kicking Skill
According to Soccer Drills Tips, kicking the soccer ball with the outside of your foot improves your ability to kick a straight and direct ball. Place the ball on the ground and stand a few feet behind it. Have a teammate line up down field and use him as your target. Run up to the ball and plant your back foot at a 30 degree angle away from your target. From this position, kick the soccer ball with the outside portion of your other foot, trying to hit the ball flush with the outside of your laces.
Soccer Instep Kick
The soccer instep kick is used for shooting on goal as well as for defenders looking to get the ball out of your defensive zone. Place the ball on the ground and stand several feet from the ball. As you run up to the ball, plant your back foot firmly in the ground, using it as support for your instep kick. Make sure your back leg is slightly bent at the knee as you come through for the kick. According to Expert Football, as you bring your kicking foot towards the ball, make sure your ankle is perpendicular with your back foot.
Goalie Ball Clearing Skill
This kicking skill is designed to teach you how to properly clear the ball away from your goal. Start by placing a ball on the halfway line. Run up to the ball, making sure to keep your eyes on the ball and not the target. As you approach the ball, plant your nonkicking foot 6 inches away from the ball. Aim the toe of your planted foot directly at your target. From here, lean back slightly and rotate your hips quickly through the zone to bring your kicking leg swiftly towards the ball. Once you are about to kick it, fully extend your kicking leg and connect with the ball using the front of your foot.
Chip Shot Skill
This basic kicking skill is designed to improve your chip shot technique. Place the ball on the ground and stand directly behind it. Plant your back leg right next to the ball, making sure your toes are pointed towards your target. Quickly bring your kicking leg back and then forward through the zone while minimizing hip rotation. Aim the tip of your toe towards the bottom of the ball as your leg comes through the zone. Bring it through the zone quickly to get the ball to loft up into the air.
