No matter how it started, having excess belly fat is not an optimal condition. In most cases, belly fat is not permanent. By following some simple suggestions, you can prevent new fat from accumulating and even decrease your existing waist measurement. Take charge of the laws of cause and effect. Avoid certain things to create a flatter abdomen.
Large Portion Sizes and High Calories
Pay attention to food quantity and quality. Avoid large portion sizes at each meal. Select portion sizes for the ideal weight that you want to achieve rather than supporting what exists. Avoid overeating and snacking between meals. Create a reduced-calorie meal plan and stick to it. Avoid excessive carbonated drinks and alcohol since they can be natural stomach bloaters. Research published in the January 2007 issue of "Inflammatory Bowel Disease" recommends avoiding certain foods and beverages that create belly fat, gas and bloating. Those foods include milk, ice cream, chocolate, cheese, yogurt, salad dressings and mayonnaise.
A Sedentary Lifestyle
Avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Find ways to move or walk more. Avoid parking close to the door at the shopping mall; instead, park in the farthest space available to encourage more walking. Avoid taking the elevator or escalator when stairs are available. Avoid thinking that there is no time to exercise or that an abdominal crunch would be too much work. Exercise and tighten the abdominal muscles. Avoid excessive television viewing from a sedentary position. Kenton Robinson, the author of "Banish Your Belly," reports that from more than 6000 men studied, those who watched television more than three hours each day were twice as likely to be fat than those who watched television only one hour a day.
Doing Nothing
The most important thing to avoid is doing nothing to reduce your belly fat. Take an honest look at your belly fat and measure your waistline. Avoid blaming belly fat on genetics or stress. Avoid compensating for belly fat by sucking it in or buying bigger clothes. Avoid thinking that "it's not that bad." Taking off belly fat requires dedication and hard work, so remember to avoid the temptation to quit. Avoid being alone in the goal of reducing your belly fat. Find support to be accountable. Avoid ignoring belly fat and begin visualizing a lean abdomen.
