Football is an action-packed sport where injuries to various body parts occur. Despite protection from padding, the shoulders are susceptible to injuries from high-impact force. If you experience a shoulder injury sustained in football, consult with a doctor immediately for the best treatment plan.
Instability
Shoulder instability is classified as a dislocation or subluxation. A shoulder dislocation occurs in football when the humerus bone pops of its socket. A subluxation happens when the shoulder slips slightly out of the socket. If you have an instability problem, you will have pain when raising your arm. You may also experience a feeling your shoulder is slipping out of place.
AC Separation
A shoulder separation is an injury to the acromioclavicular joint. The AC joint connects the shoulder blade and the collarbone. An AC joint separation occurs by falling on the shoulder with force. Symptoms of an AC separation include mild tenderness, swelling, bruising, a popping sensation or noticeable bump. A short period of rest using a shoulder sling is a treatment option.
Impingement
An impingement occurs when pressure is placed on the major tendon in your shoulder. Young athletes and adults who do repetitive lifting or activities using the arm are susceptible. Symptoms include minor pain, swelling, tenderness or stiffness when the arm is lifted. Once an impingement is detected, non-surgical and surgical options are available for treatment.
Rotator Cuff
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles used in lifting your arm up over your head. It also rotates your arm toward and away from your body. The rotator cuff is frequently injured in football and results in the inflammation of the tendon. The pain is alleviated by rest or applying heat to the affected area.
