1. Types of Sports Injuries
There are generally two types of sports injuries. An acute traumatic injury that happens as a result of a singular event. Examples of these types of sports injuries are a fracture, bruise, sprain, strain, or laceration. The second type of sports injury is a chronic injury that results from overuse. Illustrations of this type of sports injury are stress fractures, tendonitis and epiphysitis. One thing to keep in mind is that sport injuries can affect any part of your body.
2. Preventing Injuries
Competition and bravado are commonplace in sports, but because of these emotions players sometimes will not take the proper measures to prevent injuries. Therefore, always wear the necessary protective gear such as helmets, knee pads, eye wear and properly fitting shoes. Another key in sports injury prevention of chronic injuries is to listen to your body. If you are feeling pain, do not push through it; take yourself out of the game and seek treatment.
3. Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation
When you suffer a sprain or strain, immediately rest and ice the area to reduce swelling. Do not leave the ice on the injury for more than 15 or 20 minutes at a time because too much exposure to cold can damage the skin. Then wrap the injury up tight to prevent further problems. Finally, raise the injured body part off the ground and above your heart. This is the best way to treat common sports injuries to the muscles and joints.
4. Preparation is Key
Before you participate in a sport make sure your body is prepared for its rigors. Ask others who participate in the sport how fit you need to be to avoid potential injuries.
5. Eat and Drink Well
Hydrate properly before competing. Not only will proper hydration prevent cramping but it will also help prevent common muscle injuries. In addition, you should eat healthy light meals before competing. Do not eat fast food or fried food that can make you lethargic and more susceptible to injuries.
