The Olympic boxing event at the 2004 summer games in Athens, Greece was highlighted by an impressive Cuban boxing team, which took home eight medals, five of them gold. Russia finished in second place with six medals, including three gold medals. Thailand and Kazakhstan tied for third place with three medals each, including one gold medal for each country. Format
The boxing event at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games were at the Peristeri Olympic Boxing Hall. Bouts consisted of four two-minute rounds and were judged by a panel of five judges. Winners were determined through a simple point system. The boxer awarded with the most points from the judges at the end of each bout was considered the winner.
Super Heavyweight, Heavyweight And Light Heavyweight Classes
The super heavyweight class consists of boxers weighing more than 91 kg. The gold medal was won by Russian Alexander Povetkin, the silver by Egyptian Mohamed Aly, and a bronze medal was awarded to Italian Roberto Cammarelle and Cuban Michel Lopez Nunez.
Boxers weighing between 81 kg and 91 kg fight in the heavyweight class. Odlanier Solis Fonte from Cuba won the gold medal and Viktar Zuyev from Belarus won the silver. Mohamed Elsayed from Egypt and Naser Al Shami from the Syrian Arab Republic were awarded the bronze.
The light heavyweight class is designated for boxers weighing between 75 kg and 81 kg. The American Andre Ward won the gold medal, while Magomed Aripgadjiev from Belarus received the silver medal. Egyptian Ahmed Ismail and Utkirbek Haydarov from Uzbekistan were awarded the bronze medal.
69 kg to 75 kg, 64 kg to 69 kg and 60 kg to 64 kg Weight Classes
The Russian Federation's Gaydarbek Gaydarbekov won the gold medal in the 69 kg to 75 kg weight class. Gennadiy Golovkin from Kazakhstan received the silver medal, and Suriya Prasathinphimai from Thailand along with Andre Dirrell from the United States won bronze medals.
Bakhtiyar Artayev from Kazakhstan was awarded the gold medal for the 64 kg to 69 kg weight class. The silver went to Cuban Lorenzo Aragon, while bronze medals were awarded to Jung Joo Kim from the Republic of Korea and Oleg Saitov from the Russian Federation.
Thai Manus Boonjumnong won the gold medal in the 60 kg to 64 kg weight class. Cuban Yudel Johnson Cedeno won silver, and Romanian Ionut Gheorghe along with Bulgarian Boris Georgiev won bronze.
Lightweight, Featherweight And Bantamweight Classes
Cuban Mario Cesar Kindelan Mesa won the gold medal in the lightweight division, while Amir Khan from Great Britain won silver. Russian Murat Khrachev and Kazakh Serik Yeleuov were awarded bronze.
Russian Alexey Tishchenko received the gold in the featherweight class. Song Guk Kim from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea won silver, with bronze medals going to German Vitali Tajbert and Seok Hwan Jo from the Republic of Korea.
The gold in the bantamweight division went to Guillermo Rigondeaux Ortiz from Cuba and the silver to Worapoj Petchkoom from Thailand. Bronze was awarded to Bahodirjon Sooltonov from Uzbekistan and Aghasi Mammadov from Azerbaijan.
Flyweight And Light-Flyweight Classes
Yuriorkis Gamboa Toledano won Cuba's fourth gold medal in boxing in the flyweight division, while Frenchman Jerome Thomas won silver. Bronze medals were awarded to Rustamhodza Rahimov from Germany and Fuad Aslanov from Azerbaijan.
Cuba's final gold medal in boxing was won in the light-flyweight division by Yan Bhartelemy Varela. The silver went to Atagun Yalcinkaya from Turkey, while Russian Sergey Kazakov and Shiming Zou from China received bronze medals.
