Skateboarding can be rough on your feet. Professional skateboarders often wear special shoes that are designed to minimize their risk of injury. In addition shoes that are good for skateboarding provide grip and cushion, making it easier for you to perform tricks. Several shoe companies sell shoes specifically designed for skateboarding and there is ongoing research to develop new shoes.

It's All About Grip

Skateboard shoes help you grip the skateboard. The flat, extra wide soles hold onto the board and prevent slipping. In addition many shoes have extra padding on the sides and tongue. The padding cushions your foot when you do tricks. However, "Skateboarding" magazine says many long-term skaters prefer the feel of a thinner shoe.

Shock Absorbance

Many skate shoes contain technology known as the System G2. Sole Technologies Institute developed the system G2 specifically to absorb shock during skateboarding. System G2 is a dual cushion system found in the heel of shoes. It prevents heel injuries and provides cushion.

User Favorites

Several websites including Sportales and Best in Skate provide user rankings of skateboard shoes currently on the market. These rankings are based on user experiences and votes. The shoe brands featured on both websites include Etnies, Vans, ES Footwear, DC, Nike 6.0, Osiris and Emerica.

Future Shoes

Sole Technologies Institute, the inventor of the System G2, continues to perform research and develop new skateboard shoes. They have developed a sports research lab to study action sports. They intend to provide shoes that are specifically designed for skateboarding.
