Some of today's best athletes do not walk on two legs, but instead move on two wheels. Wheelchair athletes are modifying games like basketball, volleyball, rugby and more into competitive, action-filled sports. National and international federations organize wheelchair games from the local to international levels. If you are wheelchair-bound, find an activity you would enjoy and seek out information on local chapters and teams available in your area.
Quad Rugby
Quad or wheelchair rugby is a wheelchair game that combines basketball, hockey and rugby. Two teams of four players are on the court at a time, and passing, dribbling and full-court sprints are common parts of the competition. The game is played with a standard-size volleyball that participants dribble and pass to make it to the goal line, which a goalie defends. The game is a full-contact sport, and players use special metal wing-side wheelchairs to allow for easier maneuvering. Players are rated based on level of disability to create an even playing field. Wheelchair rugby is considered one of the fastest-growing wheelchair sports.
Wheelchair Basketball
Wheelchair basketball is an international sport played by both men and women. Played similarly to traditional basketball, athletes use different pushes on the wheels and dribbling patterns to signify a dribble to move across the court. Fouls are considered both for personal fouls, where a player makes intentional contact with her wheelchair or body, or physical advantage fouls where a player uses an advantage, such as a functional leg, over an opponent. This puts the players on a more even playing field.
Wheelchair Fencing
Wheelchair fencing was introduced in 1953 in England. In those early games, the participant who scored the first touch won. Today, the game has a sophisticated points system. Because wheelchair fencers must fence in close proximity to each other, the game is challenging and fast-paced. Wheelchair fencers use standard positions, such as a half-retreat, advance and lunge.
Wheelchair Hockey
Wheelchair hockey is typically played on a basketball court. Participants use electric wheelchairs and hockey sticks to take a puck across the court. Basic hockey rules are followed -- there is a faceoff, goalie and defenders. Goalies cannot reach down to defend a puck. However, the goalie can stop the puck underneath his chair wheels to defend against scoring.
