Having a proper-fitting baseball glove is essential when a child is playing or learning to play baseball. Chose your child's glove carefully; it will play a key role in his performance in the game. Take the child with you when selecting the glove to be sure it fits well.

Step 1

Purchase a glove with five fingers and a shallow pocket, sized between 9 and 11 inches, for an infield player under 8 years old to allow for better control and quicker transfer of the ball. Purchase an 11-inch glove with a deeper pocket to allow an under-8 to handle balls that hit high in the air if she plays outfield.

Step 2

Purchase a size 9 or 10 for an infield player between 9 and 13 years old, and an 11 ½-inch glove for an outfielder.

Step 3

Select a youth-specific glove, made so that they are easily broken in and designed with smaller fingers and wrist openings and oversized pockets.

Tips and Warnings

  • Select a glove that allows room for a batting glove, used to protect the lining of your glove and absorb sweat from your hands, if the child wears one. Check for a baseball glove with a snug fit but not too tight.
  • The glove should not be purchased for your child to grow into. A too-large glove prevents her from developing and refining her skills. Don't buy cheap gloves. Investing in a higher quality of leather will help to ensure a better fit.
