Anxiety is the general state of worry or stress that can get in the way of daily tasks. In the form of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD, it causes abnormal level of anxiousness disproportionate to the situation at hand. It may be caused by certain drugs, an underlying medical condition, or by neurotransmitters, like norepinephrine and serotonin, being unbalanced in the brain. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, symptoms of clinical anxiety include restlessness, trembling, fast heartbeat, hyperventilation, fatigue, sweating, headache, irritability, sleeplessness or sleep deprivation. It can be managed through allopathic medicines and prescription anti-depressants. If you suffer from anxiety, you can talk with your doctor about treating it with natural herbs before you try strong medication.
Valerian
Valerian, or Valeriana officinalis, is an herb often used to treat insomnia as well as anxiety. When treating anxiety, it is combined with other herbs like lemon balm or with St. John's wort, also known as Hypericum perforatum. However, it is limited in its effectiveness as it treats low levels of anxiety. The advised intake for anxiety treatment is 150mg two to three times daily. Use valerian with caution, as it interacts with sedative drugs like narcotics, antidepressants and antihistamines. It is also unsafe for pregnant and breast feeding women and people with liver problems.
Kava
Kava is used to treat low-to-moderate levels of anxiety. It helps ease feelings of edginess or uneasiness without making you feel sedated. A daily intake of 100mg is the suggested amount that is effective for treating low-to-moderate general anxiety disorders. Note that a warning has been issued by the FDA in relation to the use of kava and its adverse effects on the liver.
Lemon Balm
Lemon Balm, or Melissa officinalis, is used to help treat anxiety disorders because of its seemingly calming effect on moods. It is used in combination with similar herbs such as hops, chamomile and valerian to help alleviate anxiety. It can be taken once or twice a day or as needed. It may interact with thyroid medications as well as sedatives like those for anxiety or insomnia. Therefore, herbs should be taken under medical supervision.
Other Herbs
Herbs such as chamomile, ginger and licorice are often recommended for relieving anxiety. Further, essential oils and extracts from jasmine and bergamot generally have a soothing and calming effect, and for this reason, they are used in bath water and as aromatherapy. Calming oils and extracts can be used in combination with other herbal remedies for anxiety. You should consult your doctor if your anxiety does not improve with herbal treatments, as medical treatment may be more effective for your specific condition.
