The riser pad is an optional component of the skateboard setup. The riser pad features a soft rubber construction that varies in size. According to Warehouse Skateboards, riser pads commonly have a thickness of around 1/8 inch. Riser pads act as a barrier between the metallic trucks and the wooden deck of the skateboard setup.

Added Height

Equipping your skateboard with a pair of riser pads will increase the height of your setup. Adding distance between the wooden deck and the ground will aid in a jumping technique known as the ollie. Many skateboarders fasten tall trucks to the bottom of the skateboard to increase the height of their ollie. While these taller truck models offer added pop, they will increase the weight to the skateboard. Equip your skateboard with riser pads if you prefer to ollie over street obstacles.

Extra Clearance

Riser pads remain a standard component on the longboard skateboard. The longboard features large wheels that measure around 60 mm in diameter. Professional skateboarder Bob Burnquist recommends riser pads for skateboards that feature large wheels. When performing sharp turning techniques, the bottom of the wooden deck may make contact with the urethane wheels. This will cause the skateboard to lose momentum quickly and send you flying across the pavement. Install a pair of riser pads onto your skateboard to give your wheels the necessary clearance.

Shock Absorption

Many skateboarders prefer to jump down handrails and grass gaps. High-impact tricks will cause pressure cracks to form throughout the wooden skateboard deck. The soft rubber design of the riser pads will help to absorb the shock as your wheels make contact with the pavement. Riser pads will decrease the amount of pressure put on the joints of your knees and ankles. Equip your skateboard with a pair of riser pads to prolong the life of your skateboard and prevent painful injuries.

Customization

Skateboard companies offer the rubber riser pads in various color options. To add a little extra flair to your setup, purchase a pair of riser pads that match the color scheme of your skateboard. Install a pair of clear riser pads above your skateboard trucks to customize your ride, and equip your skateboard with two different colored riser pads to give your setup a unique look.
