Nicotine is an extremely addictive chemical. It stimulates the brain and, with repeated exposure, the brain becomes used to it. As a result, once the nicotine is no longer there, the brain goes through withdrawal. This is why it is so hard to quit smoking; tobacco contains nicotine. One medication that can be prescribed to help people quit smoking is Champix, sometimes known as Chantix, which is the brand name for the chemical varenicline. This medication blocks the parts of the brain that respond to nicotine, reducing withdrawal symptoms.
Step 1
Start taking Champix seven days before you plan to quit smoking. During this time you can smoke regularly.
Step 2
For the first three days, take only one of the white Champix pills.
Step 3
During the following four days, take two of the white pills, one each morning and one at night.
Step 4
Stop smoking. At this point you will have taken Champix for seven days. Not only should you stop smoking, but you will no longer take the white pills. Instead, take two blue pills--again, one in the morning and one in the evening.
