How to Use Inulin & Psyllium

Herbal supplements are a popular movement for treating a variety of different conditions. Some supplements, such as inulin and psyllium, are not broken down as they pass through the digestive tract. This allows them to help you clean out your digestive tract and, in the case of inulin, provide nutrients for the healthy bacteria present in the digestive tract. Taking inulin and psyllium can promote digestive health, but you must use them properly to maximize their effectiveness. Before you take either of these compounds, talk with your doctor to make sure you understand the potential risks associated with inulin and psyllium intake and determine the proper dosage.

Step 1

Take between 5 and 8 g of inulin each day as this can help healthy bacteria in the intestines flourish, which can prevent gastrointestinal infections and can also aid in digestion. Healthy bacteria help break down nutrients in the intestines. Inulin is primarily used to help people who are concerned about the health of their digestive tract or who have recently taken antibiotics, which can deplete the "healthy" bacteria in the intestines.

Step 2

Mix psyllium powder or granules with 8 oz. of a pleasant tasting beverage. If you are taking psyllium capsules or tablets, follow the directions on the packaging. Chew psyllium wafers thoroughly. For psyllium to work properly and to prevent side effects, Medline Plus notes that you must drink at least 8 oz. of liquid when you take it.

Step 3

Take psyllium 1 to 3 times each day. Psyllium is a type of soluble fiber, which means that it will pass through your digestive tract and help increase the bulk of your stool, promoting bowel movement regularity. There is no evidence that taking inulin and psyllium simultaneously will cause any health problems, but you should be aware that inulin works to help intestinal bacteria grow, whereas psyllium is primarily used to add fiber to your diet.
