Guided meditation provides you with the opportunity to connect your mind and body. It is a technique used for many issues such as sleep disorders, anxiety and goal setting. Meditation might also serve as a welcome approach to your weight loss efforts. Through guided meditation, you can increase your awareness of your thoughts on food, diet, body image and exercise.
Step 1
Designate a special place that is quiet and private so that you will not be interrupted or distracted. You might choose your bedroom or office as such a space. Prepare the space by closing doors and turning off anything that makes noise like your phone.
Step 2
Choose a comfortable place to sit. This can be on a cushion on the floor, a wall you can lean against, or a comfortable chair. You might find a cross-legged position comfortable or a variation of what meditation and yoga practitioners call the lotus pose.
Step 3
Bring your attention to your breath. Breathe deeply and calmly. Close your eyes or focus on something in front of you such as the flame of a candle or a flower. As you breathe adjust your posture so that you are comfortable yet alert. Choose a word that will become your mantra, a word that is inspiring and calming in relation to your weight loss efforts. Slim, lean, curvy, healthy or athletic are examples of mantra words that can promote positive body-mind connections.
Step 4
Become aware of your thoughts. Each time a thought comes, let it go. Notice thoughts about food, diet, exercise and body image. Just notice your thoughts and continually bring your attention back to your breath.
Step 5
Repeat your mantra word while you meditate. Visualize the word running through your body. Chant the word on an inhale and again as you exhale.Be patient with your meditation practice. In his book, "Meditating to Attain a Healthy Body Weight," Dr. LeShan recommends a six-week commitment, meditating five days a week for about 15 minutes each day.
Step 6
Keep a journal or diary. Write after your 15-minute meditation session. When you become distracted by thoughts as you meditate, remind yourself that you can write about it later. When you go to write, consider how your thoughts on food, diet, body image and weight loss are changing. Brainstorm other mantras.
Tips and Warnings
- For additional support, attend a yoga studio or meditation center that offers group guided meditation classes for weight loss .
- Consider other aspects of your lifestyle when addressing weight loss goals. Consult with a physician when making any changes to diet, exercise and lifestyle. Guided meditation alone will not bring about weight loss. Include a healthy balanced diet that covers all five food groups as well as a weekly exercise program.
