Effexor XR is the extended release version of a medication used to treat depression. The drug, known generically as venlafaxine, is available as a pill or capsule through a prescription from your physician. Along with depression, Effexor XR may be prescribed to treat anxiety and panic disorders, or hot flashes.

Venlafaxine also may cause less serious side effects that may disappear on their own. These do not require your doctor’s attention unless they continue or are a nuisance. These types of less severe side effects include anxiety, unusual dreams, nausea, diarrhea, lessened appetite, indigestion, tingling, trembling, tiredness, chills, constipation, lowered libido, drowsiness, weight loss, taste changes, night sweats and burning sensations.

These can include impulsivity, hyperventilation, lightheadedness, anxiety, ear noises, convulsions, crying, diarrhea, depersonalization, headaches, loss of hearing, fear, euphoria or dysphoria, irritability, paranoia, spinning sensations, depression, nightmares, unconsciousness, feeling of electric shocks, restlessness and over-excitement, among others.
