Blood sugar, also known as blood glucose, is a fuel your body requires for cellular repair and physical energy. Your body manufactures glucose from virtually all foods you consume. However, elevated blood sugar levels can be toxic to your organs and can contribute to diabetes, headaches, fatigue and depression. Certain foods can contribute to rapid glucose spikes in your bloodstream.

Refined Flour

Refined flour is made from grains, such as wheat and rye, that have been extensively processed. It is found in bleached pasta, white bread, cakes, pastries and fast food sandwich buns. Refined flour is a simple carbohydrate, which your body converts into glucose at a much faster rate than whole-grain products. The refining process also strips grains of dietary fiber, which your body uses to help control blood sugar levels.

Refined Sugars

Refined sugar is a product of sugar cane and also can be made from beets. It is composed of sucrose, which is extracted from these plants through heat, chemicals and mechanical filtering. Refined sugar is quickly turned into glucose by your digestive system and rapidly transferred to your bloodstream. Candies, pastries, soft drinks, doughnuts, ice cream, cookies and cakes are typically high in refined sugars.

Other Foods

Although not all fruits have a significant impact on blood glucose, certain fruits, such as watermelon, raisins, dates, pineapple and apricots, may quickly raise sugar levels in your bloodstream. Blood sugar is also affected by starchy vegetables, such as potatoes, yams and corn. Cereals, particularly processed cereals with added sugar and artificial colors and flavors, may also contribute to blood sugar spikes.
