How to Stop Smoking Drugs

Quitting smoking can be more difficult to do than breaking other habits. Due to the effects of nicotine, smoking is extremely addictive. When you stop smoking, the parts of your brain that respond to nicotine begin creating withdrawal symptoms, which make you crave nicotine There are many drugs that can be used to help you quit smoking, either by replacing the nicotine or by helping reduce the withdrawal symptoms.

Step 1

Use nicotine-replacement therapy. There are many different products and medications that provide nicotine for the body, which can help reduce cravings. Nicotine gum, lozenges and sprays all allow you to regulate how much nicotine is received each day. Another product, the nicotine patch, delivers a constant amount of nicotine through the skin. These products can be used to help you quit smoking.

Step 2

Take Zyban. Zyban is the brand name for a medication called bupropion, which is commonly used to treat depression. Zyban has been approved by the FDA to help people quit smoking because it can reduce cravings for nicotine. Zyban is usually taken twice a day for several weeks and is only available with a prescription.

Step 3

Take Chantix. Chantix is another drug that can be used to help people stop smoking. Chantix works by blocking the parts of the brain that respond to nicotine. This helps in two different ways: it reduces withdrawal symptoms and it also makes smoking less pleasurable. Chantix is only available with a prescription and is most effective when you take it for two weeks before you quit smoking, although you continue to take it after you quit smoking.
