A number of factors can contribute to the desire to clean out your intestines. You may be constipated, suffering from gas or feel bloated. You may believe the practice can improve irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux or other digestive conditions. Your doctor may even have recommended you try it. The reasons vary from person to person. But regardless of the motive, there are a few easy ways to facilitate the process.

Cleansers

One of the more popular methods for cleaning out the intestines is colon cleansing. You simply take a dietary supplement each day to encourage the passage of waste. Proponents of this practice believe the colon houses many toxins that contribute to a number of health problems, explains gastroenterologist Michael Picco in an article for MayoClinic.com. However, cleansing the colon by this means is often considered unnecessary, since the intestinal tract is capable of eliminating waste, bacteria and toxins all on its own.

Fiber

Instead of using a colon cleanser, Picco recommends increasing your intake of dietary fiber to stimulate bowel movements. A good goal for men under the age of 50 is 38 g each day, while women within this same age range should get around 25 g a day. Most products made from whole grain, such as barley, bulgur, oatmeal, millet, buckwheat, brown rice and wild rice, are rich in this nutrient, but you also can find fiber in many fruits, vegetables and legumes.

Fluids

Increasing your intake of fluids is another option for cleaning out your intestines. Water is by far your best choice, but almost any fluid, such as juice, milk, tea, sports drinks and even soup, can be beneficial. Try to get at least eight glasses of fluid each day, advises the American Academy of Family Physicians. These glasses should contain roughly 8 oz., so you're looking at a consumption of 64 oz. a day.

Exercise

Lack of exercise is one of the most common causes of constipation. This means increasing your level of physical activity can help clean out your intestines. Start walking, biking, swimming or taking part in other athletic pursuits most days of the week to encourage regular bowel movements.
