As the number of people who join gyms and become concerned about their health continues to rise, so does the need for fitness professionals. Personal training is a career opportunity available to those who are passionate about fitness and helping others. You can turn your passion into a career with a certification in personal training. With the appropriate materials, dedication and a first aid certification, you are eligible to sit for a certified personal trainer exam.

Step 1

Sign up for a personal training certification package. Purchase a package online. This includes books, study guides, DVDs and online access to practice tests, videos and slide shows of materials. Packages range from $400 to $800. More expensive packages will provide you with additional study materials.

Step 2

Study your materials. Each personal training package will include a study guide. Complete the study guide as you read the chapters of your personal training textbook. You can later use your study guide to review information.

Step 3

Narrow your focus. The personal training organization you decide to certify with will provide you with a test break down and important pages to focus on during your studies. For example, the National Academy of Sports Medicine exam focuses on assessment, technique, program design, nutrition, client relations and professional practice. Seventy-five percent of test questions come from assessment, technique and program design.

Step 4

Take a practice test. Personal training packages will provide you with a log-on to take a practice test an unlimited number of times. Take the test in a quiet area without your study materials. You are able to review the practice test upon completion. Look back other the questions you answered wrong and pay close attention to that material as you continue to study.

Step 5

Learn CPR and first aid. Most certifications require you have a CPR and first aid certification before sitting for the exam. You can enroll in training classes at a community college or a local chapter of the American Red Cross.

Step 6

Set up a test date. Once you feel you are prepared, schedule your test. A majority of certifications are completed at supervised testing centers.

Tips and Warnings

  • It is best to become certified through a nationally recognized personal training program. Gyms and training facilities across the country recommend the National Academy of Sports Medicine, American College of Sports Medicine, American Council on Exercise, National Strength and Conditioning Association and the International Sports Science Association.
  • Nationally recognized personal training programs only allot between three and six months to take your exam. Otherwise, there will be an additional charge to take your certification exam at a later date.
