Athletes in training must follow disciplined routines and work hard to achieve their fitness and sports goals. Help them do their best by giving them gifts that ease aspects of their routine, that help them track their progress or that otherwise make their training simpler and more fruitful. If you are unsure which gifts are suitable, ask a coach or fitness expert for tips.

Runners

Runners need everything from reliable footwear to training tools. Visit a sports fitness store to research different brands and types of running shoes. If you know the shoe size and type of training program -- for example, crosstraining or marathon -- the staff can help you choose the right model. A pedometer is also a suitable gift. It senses body movement and tracks the number of steps a person takes, which helps a runner analyze daily workouts.

Team Sport Athletes

If your loved one plays a team sport, such as basketball, baseball, softball, football or soccer, consider a gift suited to that sport. For example, buy a team jersey from a professional team or an item signed by a favorite player. Or you could buy an athlete in training new equipment or clothing. Basketball players require reliable sneakers and basketballs. Baseball and softball players might enjoy a new bat or glove. Football and soccer players often use cleats for which you might be able to buy replacement studs.

Bicyclists

Of course, a new bicycle is the best gift for a bicyclist. But if high-end gifts will break your budget, consider some bicycle add-ons, such as safety equipment or water-bottle attachments. If your loved one trains at night, buy flashers or reflectors to catch the attention of motorists. Bicycle cleats are helpful because they attach the feet to the pedals securely, preventing slippage. For cold weather bicyclists, buy warm clothing designed to wick moisture away from the body.

Other Athletes

Many athletes work out alone, so portable MP3 players and radios are an entertaining gift option. Note that athletes in training typically need a model that straps securely to clothing or the upper arm. Otherwise, the device will fall off during a strenuous workout. Other ideas include a supply of sports drinks or bars, videos or books related to athletic training, comfortable workout suits and sweatbands to keep perspiration away from the eyes.
