Cold temperatures and snow doesn't mean you have to spend all winter huddled by the fire. Adults can partake in a variety of winter activities that keep them active and make cold winter days more enjoyable. Remember to wear appropriate clothing, including a hat, scarf and gloves when participating in outdoor activities in cold temperatures. Bring along plenty of water and snacks, and pay attention to weather reports when spending time outdoors in the winter.

Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country skiing can be performed on any area covered in snow, such as a park, golf course or groomed trail. In addition to being more accessible, it is also less expensive than alpine skiing. The sport offers a way to explore nature during the winter while exercising. According to the Mayo Clinic website, cross-country skiing burns between 500 and 700 calories an hour depending on your weight. Rent or borrow skis for your first outing and consider taking a lesson until you learn the stride of cross-country skiing. Use ski poles to help stay balanced as you ski.

Ice Skating

Though many cities provide indoor ice rinks for year round skating, ice skating on a frozen pond can be adventurous and exciting. Wear clothing that allows you to move easily. The combination of skating and the sun's reflection on the ice can raise your body temperature quickly, so consider wearing layers that you can easily remove if you get too warm. For an added challenge to skating, consider joining an informal or amateur ice hockey league.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing has become the world's fastest growing winter sport, according to "Snowshoe Magazine." With little more than a pair of snowshoes, appropriate clothing and snow, you can be on your way to learning a new sport. Compared with other winter sports, snowshoeing is an inexpensive activity that offers a cardiovascular workout and low risk of injury. While many people enjoy the peaceful aspect of snowshoeing, make an effort to snowshoe with a partner or friend. Pack water and a snack if you plan to travel far distances while snowshoeing.

Sledding

Kids aren't the only ones who enjoy sledding down a snowy hill. In addition to being an enjoyable winter activity, hiking your sled back up the hill offers an aerobic workout. While there are some areas that charge a small fee to sled down a steep hill, most sledding areas are offered free. Rent or purchase an inexpensive sled and find a free place to sled for a cost effective winter activity. Challenge friends to a race or time one another as you race down the hill.

Ice Fishing

Fishing isn't just a warm temperature activity; individuals across the world lower their lines into holes cut in the ice to catch dinner. Ice fishing can be dangerous and expensive, so consider joining an experienced fisher for your first ice fishing expedition. According to the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute guide to ice fishing, state fishing regulations continue during the winter months, so contact your local fish and game agency to determine what licenses are necessary and what requirements are in effect.
