A foot with a high arch tends toward supination, the outward rolling of the ankle while running or walking. If you have high arches you might be prone to hammertoes, clawed toes, tight Achilles tendons, lower back pain and other problems, according to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. High-arched feet often don't absorb shock well, according to ePodiatry, so you should wear athletic shoes with a lot of cushioning and flexibility.

Ryka Moira

The Moira, manufactured by Ryka, provides a good deep heel that cushions and absorbs shock while you are running, walking or cross training, according to Fitness Magazine. These shoes are also light and flexible. According to the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, if you have high arches you need less motion control in your shoes because your feet are already quite rigid.

Nike Air Zoom Vomero+3

According to Fitness Magazine, the Vomero offers a plush cushioned midsole that allows for a softer athletic experience, whether you are running, walking, or doing cardio at the gym.

New Balance 805

This shoe provides superior shock absorption, a must if you have high arches. It is also very lightweight, so even though the cushioning is exceptional, the shoe itself does not feel heavy.

Buying Tips

Try on and buy shoes later in the day, because your feet get bigger over the course of the day and after exercise. Wear the socks you will wear with the shoes, and bring an old pair of shoes so that the salesperson can get of sense of how your high arches wear your shoes. Typically the shoes of women with high arches show wear on the outer edge due to supination. Don't expect to "break in" your shoes; shoes should feel good from the moment you buy them, according to ePodiatry.
