Carefully controlling your daily food intake can help you manage or reduce your weight. A good diet will leave you feeling satisfied and healthy. It's important to select a dietary approach that you can stick with. Do research before chosing a diet. Some diets can be dangerous by not supplying enough of the nutrients your body needs. Before transforming your eating habits, consult your physician for suggestions to stay healthy in your quest to lose weight.

Vegetarian Diet

Though a vegetarian diet doesn't guarantee rapid weight loss, following a vegetarian menu will help you limit your calorie and fat intake. To healthfully follow a vegetarian eating approach, plan meals with foods that are low in fat and provide ample amounts of nutrients. Include foods that contain proteins, but choose protein-rich foods that are not high in fats and calories. Include foods such as low-fat cheese, dried beans and soy products in your diet. Steer clear of high-calorie condiments as well. Finally, make an effort to steam or roast your vegetables rather than fry them.

Focus on Your Beverages

When planning your meals, don't focus solely on solid foods. Plan your drinks also. Drink 8 cups of water every day. Water has no calories and it makes you feel full, which helps you eat less. Water helps transform body fat into energy and is credited with helping to prevent headaches and exhaustion. As many fruits and vegetables have a sizable water content, eating them will add to your daily water intake as well.

Avoid Fad Diets

Avoid fad diets that promise to help you lose more than 2 lbs. a week. The safest way to lose weight through diet is to control the amount of calories you eat or burn off the calories you eat through exercise. Be wary of fad diets that promise speedy weight loss through the consumption of large amounts of one food or a total withdrawal from foods that provide your body with needed vitamins or nutrients. If in doubt, consult a physician before committing to a questionable diet.

Eat in Moderation

Depriving yourself of desserts, sweets or your favorite foods will most likely lead to unhealthy binge eating in the future. It's alright to occasionally satisfy your cravings with small portions of your favorite foods. Instead of eating an entire slice of pie or cake, serve yourself a small piece and put the rest away. Rather than eating a couple of your favorite cookies, find a suitable low-fat substitute and enjoy one every day. Keep frozen yogurt in your freezer instead of ice cream and avoid sundae toppings like chocolate sauce or whipped cream. Top your frozen yogurt with sliced strawberries or walnuts or eat it plain.
