The National Junior Baseball League, or NJBL, is a youth baseball league that began in 1990 in the New York City area. The NJBL offers an umpire certification program in baseball and softball that certifies umpires to work NJBL games as well as in other leagues.

Certification Course

According to the NJBL Umpires website, the NJBL Umpire School and Mechanics Classes are offered eight times during the fall and winter each year. This course trains umpires on the rules and mechanics of umpiring, and CPR and AED first aid training is also offered free.

Costs

The certification course for baseball and softball costs $275, as of 2011. The NJBL Umpires website notes that additional fees include insurance, shirt and cap. The annual insurance fee is $70, while the shirt and cap fee cost a combined $50.

Game Work

Certified NJBL umpires can expect to work a mixture of games from the National Junior Baseball League and other amateur leagues. Outside leagues can include other youth or high school leagues. The NJBL Umpires website says that you will receive game assignments just about every day you are available and also notes that some umpires work up to 300 games per year.

Game Pay Information

According to the NJBL Umpires website, as of 2011, the pay range for games is $50 to $75. The rate depends on the league, age and level of play. Pay for official NJBL games ranges from $60 to $90 per game, depending on the age, number of umpires and length of the games.
