Steak 'n Shake has been serving its Steakburgers and hand-dipped milkshakes since 1934. As with most burger restaurants, it's best to keep burgers, fries and milkshakes to an occasional treat. While some selections are nutritionally better than others, your best bet at Steak 'n Shake is to stick with small-sized portions.
Steakburgers
Steak 'n Shake offers several different Steakburger flavors and sizes. The lowest calorie choice is the single Steakburger, which provides 280 calories, 11g total fat, 4.5g saturated fat, 0g trans fat and 310mg sodium. The numbers quickly add up with larger sandwiches. For example, the triple Steakburger with cheese provides 610 calories, 39g total fat, 17g saturated fat, 1.5g trans fat and 870mg sodium. The highest calorie option is the Portobello 'n Swiss Steakburger, which provides 770 calories, 56g total fat, 16g saturated fat, 3.5g trans fat and 920mg sodium.
Sandwiches
Steak 'n Shake's sandwiches vary considerably in their nutritional profiles. The Grilled Chicken Sandwich is one of the lower-calorie options, as it provides only 400 calories, 15g fat, 2g saturated fat, 1g trans fat and 980mg sodium. The least healthy sandwich is like the A-1 Peppercorn Melt, which provides more fat, saturated fat and trans fat than any other sandwich, including the Steakburgers. It weighs in at 860 calories, 57g fat, 19g saturated fat, 4.5g trans fat and 1,390mg sodium. The trans fat is particularly unhealthy, as it raises bad cholesterol --- akin to saturated fat --- and also lowers good cholesterol.
Chili
The chili at Steak 'n Shake is rather high in fat and sodium, which are both good reasons to opt for the cup size instead of a bowl. A cup of Chili Deluxe provides 610 calories, 37g total fat, 19g saturated fat, 0.5g trans fat and 1,280mg sodium. A bowl provides double those amounts, which translates to more than a full day's worth of fat and sodium, and more than two days' worth of saturated fat. Excessive sodium intake from foods like Steak 'n Shake's chili may contribute to high blood pressure.
Milkshakes
Steak 'n Shake's hand-dipped milkshakes come in several sizes. A small vanilla milkshake provides 530 calories, 19g total fat, 13g saturated fat, 0g trans fat and 74g sugar. Most other flavors provide more calories, fat and sugar than the vanilla. The highest calorie option is the large Peanut Butter Cup Milk Shake, which provides 1,220 calories, 49g total fat, 31g saturated fat, 1g trans fat and 163g sugar. The one good quality about such a large milkshake is the amount of calcium it provides. Each large milkshake, regardless of flavor, provides 90 percent of the daily value of calcium, which is a key nutrient for bone health.
