History
Maca, also called Peruvian ginseng, is a South American cruciferous (a large family of plants that include mustards, cabbages, broccoli and turnips). Maca has a shape similar to a radish. Native Peruvians have used maca root as a medicine and as a source of food for thousands of years. Maca is also available as a nutritional supplement. It is marketed as a sexual stimulant, energy enhancer and as having a wide range of other benefits.
Promoted Nutrients
The manufacturers of maca claim that the plant is full of nutrients and phytochemicals that include alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids and amino acids. Maca is also said to be rich in calcium and potassium. The root of the maca is used in capsules, tablets and powered form as an herbal supplement. It can also be used as a food additive. A number of the compounds in maca root are touted as having an effect on the central nervous system (consists of the brain and spinal cord, where many bodily functions are controlled).
Hormonal Benefits
Maca root is promoted as a natural means of correcting hormonal imbalances that commonly occur during perimenopause and menopause. It is said to ease hot flashes and pain experienced during menstruation. Maca roots apparent ability to affect hormones is also said to improve libido, fertility and other sexual problems in both men and women.
Additional Benefits
The various nutrients in maca root are said to help improve stamina and strength, ease chronic fatigue and enhance mental clarity. Maca may also helps recondition the adrenal glands (small, triangular glands located on top of both kidneys involved in the release of hormones).

Some of the side effects reported with the use of maca root include headaches, insomnia, upset stomach, heart burn, moodiness and increased heart rate. If maca root causes an adverse reaction, some manufacturers suggest taking less than the recommended dosage for a couple of weeks or use the supplement for a few weeks then take a few days offs. The average recommended daily dosage is between 3000 and 5000 mg.
