In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) the liver provides balance between body systems. Qi, known as energy, is essential for overall health and wellness. Liver Qi stagnation, or interruption of the normal process of the liver, may cause a multitude of illnesses, including depression, dizziness and numerous imbalances in the body that cause colds, abdominal pain, constipation, PMS symptoms, poor appetite, immune deficiency and more. Overactive or underactive liver function may be affected by emotions such as stress and, in Chinese belief, it may be balanced by a variety of herbs or herbal treatments that restore balance not only to the liver, but the entire body system.
Milk Thistle
According to Diane Joswick, L.Ac., MOSM, various herbs such as milk thistle help to restore balance of the liver following liver Qi stagnation. Milk thistle has long been used in the West to help treat depression and may help protect the liver from damage caused by alcohol and food toxins.
Dang Gui
Dang gui, also known as angelica, helps restore blood flow and is believed to harmonize blood circulation, especially for those suffering from menstrual disorders.
Marshmallow Root
Marshmallow root has been used in Oriental medicine for generations to treat digestive disorders and support the mucus membranes that line many internal organs and passageways, especially the stomach and intestines.
Yellow Dock Root
Ancient Chinese tradition makes full use of Yellow Dock Root as a premium detoxifier that helps to relieve congestion in the liver to restore liver Qi and function. It is known to clear the bowels and restore Qi throughout the digestive tract and encourage and support production of bile.
