Checking your pulse rate is a simple way to see if you fall within the normal range for beats as well as for the rhythm of your heart. Many people check their pulse rate during exercise or while at rest. You can find a pulse in your neck, groin or top of your foot, but the inside of your wrist is probably the easiest and most common place.

Step 1

Turn your hand over so your palm faces up. Place your middle and index finger of your other hand across the inside of your wrist, 1 inch under the base of your hand.

Step 2

Press down into the groove made by your middle tendons and outside bone. You will feel a throbbing sensation, which is your heart beat.

Step 3

Count the beats of your heart for 10 consecutive seconds, while you are sitting still. Multiply the number by 6 to determine the number of beats in one minute.

Step 4

Notice if your heart beats in a constant, even pattern with an equal amount of strength between each beat. You should feel no missed or extra beats.

Tips and Warnings

  • A normal pulse rate for someone with no medical conditions is between 60 and 90 beats per minute. Contact your physician if your pulse was irregular to schedule further testing.
