Milk thistle contains the flavonoid silymarin, which is thought to protect the liver due to its antioxidant properties. Milk thistle's anti-inflammatory properties may help the liver heal and repair itself by growing new liver cells. In addition, milk thistle may reduce damage to the liver from specific diseases such as cirrhosis, hepatitis and cancer.
Cirrhosis and Milk Thistle
Cirrhosis of the liver occurs after repeated insults on the liver from alcohol, viruses or chemicals. Cirrhosis is a chronic condition that can lead to liver cancer and death. According to Mayo Clinic, many European studies indicate milk thistle slows the progression of cirrhosis. Milk thistle has improved liver function and lowered the number of deaths due to cirrhosis. However, the studies have been poorly designed and more thorough research is required before a recommendation can be made on the use of milk thistle for cirrhosis.
Hepatitis and Milk Thistle
Hepatitis is caused by a virus. Some forms of the disease, such as hepatitis C and B can become chronic. In addition, the damage caused by chronic viral hepatitis over time may lead to cirrhosis. According to The University of Maryland Medical Center, milk thistle is a popular treatment of viral hepatitis, especially chronic hepatitis C. However, studies performed on milk thistle for hepatitis have shown mixed results. Improvement of the disease is indicated in some studies while others show no measurable benefit. Milk thistle hasn't been investigated in relation to interferon or other treatments for viral hepatitis.
Liver Cancer and Milk Thistle
According to UMMC, in the laboratory, silymarin, the active substance in milk thistle, may help slow cancer. Silymarin appears to interfere with the cancer cells' ability to multiply and it shortens their life span. In addition, it is thought to reduce the blood supply to tumors. Further studies are needed to evaluate milk thistle's ability to fight cancer in patients as opposed to test tubes.
Warning
Milk thistle is considered safe. Possible side effects are usually mild stomach aches and diarrhea. Some people may be sensitive to the ingredients in milk thistle and develop a skin rash. If you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant or are breastfeeding do not take milk thistle. If you suffer from hormone-related disorders such as uterine, breast or prostate cancers do not take milk thistle. Consult your doctor before taking milk thistle.
