How to Change a Smooth Treadmill Belt

Smooth Fitness produces a variety of exercise machines and accessories, including a line of treadmills intended for home use. These devices feature a walking belt wrapped around a deck and two rollers located at either end of the belt, with the deck in the middle. A drive belt connects one end of the front roller to the treadmill's motor unit, which propels the walking belt forward. Should the walking belt on your Smooth Fitness treadmill wear out, you can install a replacement by partially disassembling the device.

Step 1

Insert the treadmill's safety key into the matching slot on the console unit. Press the button labeled "POWER" and wait for the device to power up. Use the buttons labeled "INCLINE" to lower the end of the walking deck to the ground. Press the "POWER" button and remove the safety key.

Step 2

Pull the treadmill's power cord out of the outlet. Inspect the exterior of the motor hood and locate the installed screws. Remove the screws and detach the motor hood from the treadmill's base. Set the motor hood aside.

Step 3

Remove the bolts installed in the two end caps located at the rear of the walking deck. Pull the end caps off of the deck and set them aside. Pry the side rails free of the walking deck and set them aside. Detach the drive belt connecting the motor pulley to the front roller.

Step 4

Remove the bolts or nuts that secure the one side of the walking deck to the treadmill's base. Loosen the bolts or nuts installed on the opposite side of the deck. Lift the unsecured side of the deck upwards and pull the walking belt free.

Step 5

Discard the old walking belt and slide the replacement belt onto the deck in its place. Reinstall the bolts or nuts, and tighten the matching fasteners on the opposite side of the deck. Attach the drive belt to the motor pulley and front roller.

Step 6

Attach the side rails to the sides of the walking deck. Fit the end caps onto the rear of the walking deck and secure them back into place. Return the motor hood to its original location and reinstall the screws.

Step 7

Lift the top half of the walking belt upwards. Apply a coating of silicone lubricant to the left side of the deck, then apply another coating to the right side of the deck. Lower the walking belt. Plug the treadmill's power cord back into the outlet.

Step 8

Insert the safety key into the slot on the console unit. Press the "POWER" button and wait for the device to power up. Use the "SPEED" button to start the walking belt. Leave the treadmill running for five minutes at the slowest speed, then deactivate the device.
