USA Boxing, the national governing body of amateur boxing in the U.S., enjoys a dominant history in the Olympic Games with 106 appearances on the winner's podium that include 47 gold, 23 silver and 36 bronze medals. The most recent USA Boxing medalist include bronze medal recipient Andre Dirrell and gold medal holder Andre Ward. Training for USA Boxing includes participating in drills that hone accuracy and efficiency. USA Boxing training produces boxers that are intelligent, highly skilled and possess great endurance.

Training Structure

A USA Boxing training session will begin with a warm-up. Common warm-ups are jumping rope or calisthenic drills such as push-ups, crunches, or jumping jacks. You will then stretch the whole body concentrating on the arms, legs and lower back. Three rounds on the focus mitts, the heavy bag or sparring will make up the greatest portion of your workout. Two rounds of speed bag or double end bag work should be performed for conditioning and accuracy. The workout should end with one or two rounds of stretching.

Offensive Tactics

During your USA Boxing training session, your should work on your offensive tactics. These include the straight punch or jab, which is performed with the right hand if you are left-handed or the left hand if you are right-handed. The cross is your most powerful punch and is thrown with the rear hand. The hook can be thrown with either hand by forming a half circle on the way to your opponent's body. The uppercut is an powerful punch that is thrown upward toward your opponent's chin when you are close together.

Defensive Tactics

Successful boxers perform many repetitions of defensive tactics during their USA Boxing training. Evasive tactics are those allow you to escape a punch and include slipping a punch or moving to the side, the bob and weave or performing a U motion under an incoming punch. Sometimes you might not be able to escape a punch so a deflection will be the best way for avoid being hit. Some common deflections are blocks that involve using the palm of the hand to block the blow and the parry or movement of the upper body or hands that cause the punch to glance away from the body.

Safety

The main objective of the safety features in USA Boxing training is to protect the boxers. All boxers participating in USA Boxing training are required to wear a form of fitted mouth piece, a foul-proof cup, and an approved head guard. Female boxers must wear a breast protector. If a boxer participates in a match that is stopped for excessive or dangerous blows to the face, that boxer is not allowed to return to sparring or competition until cleared by a doctor.
