ADD (attention deficit disorder) is a disorder that presents with neurological symptoms that are typically chronic (recurring). These symptoms categorize ADD as a developmental disorder and include an inability to pay attention, impulsiveness and hyperactivity. While its cause is largely unknown, its treatment has been discovered; the most common drugs used are those falling under the classification of stimulants.
Adderall
Adderall works by stimulating the chemicals in your brain responsible for both hyperactivity and impulsivity control. It comes in two forms: an oral tablet and an extended-release capsule. Both should be taken with a glass of water, however the capsule needs to be swallowed whole rather than broken apart. It is meant to be released slowly. Your doctor will determine the dose that's appropriate for you.
The most common side effects include include insomnia, loss of appetite, headache, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, weight loss, dry mouth and impotence in adults. Serious side effects include chest pain, blurred vision, seizures, fast or uneven heartbeats, fainting, tremors or hallucinations. If you experience any serious side effects, call your doctor immediately.
Concerta
Another stimulant, Concerta also works on your central nervous system to help control actions of hyperactivity and impulsivity, which are caused by ADD. Its two forms are a regular tablet and an extended-release capsule, both of which should be swallowed with a full glass of water. It should also be taken 30 minutes before a meal.
The most common side effects of Concerta include problems with your vision, a slight headache, weight loss, insomnia, sweating, skin rash, stomach pain, vomiting, loss of appetite, numbness, coldness in your extremities (hands and feet), weight loss and nausea. Serious side effects which require immediate doctor's attention include fever, sore throat, restlessness, aggression, hallucinations, high blood pressure and bruising easily.
Ritalin
Ritalin works the same way the previous two medications do. It affects the central nervous system to help control impulsiveness and hyperactivity. It comes in a variety of forms that include the original tablet, Ritalin SR (sustained-release), and Ritalin LA (extended-release). It also comes as a chewable tablet and in liquid suspension form. The tablets can all be taken with or without food, but should be taken with a glass of water. To prevent sleeping problems, this medication is better taken in the morning.
The most common side effects of this medication include sweating, skin rash, headache, stomach pain, vomiting, loss of appetite, nausea, weight loss, problems with your vision and feeling nervous. More serious side effects that require immediate medical attention include bruising easily, headache with blisters, fever, acting unusual, hallucinating, reddened skin and extremely high blood pressure.
