Risperdal Side Effects

Risperdal (generic name risperidone) is an antipsychotic medication used in the treatment of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and the irritability associated with autism. It comes in four forms: injection, liquid suspension, oral tablet and disintegrating tablet. This medication is effective because of its ability to block elevated chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin and dopamine. It is, however, accompanied by various side effects.

Common Side Effects

According to eMedTV.com, the side effects of Risperdal have been ranked by the percentage of people they affected during clinical trials. The most common side effects experienced include drowsiness, upper-respiratory infections, insomnia, increased saliva production, stomach pain, nausea, headaches, greater appetite, fatigue, agitation, anxiety, heartburn and dizziness. These affected between 14 and 67 percent of those who took Risperdal.

Second-most Common Side Effects

The following side effects affected between 1 and 14 percent of those taking this antipsychotic; these effects are still considered common but not severe. They include dry mouth, indigestion, sore throat, bladder leakage or incontinence, weight gain, coughing, dry skin, confusion, decrease or increase in sex drive, problems achieving an orgasm, long-term, painful erection, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, runny nose, changes in vision, muscle or joint pain, chest pain, back pain, toothaches, fever, acne and sinus infections.

Serious Side Effects

Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of the following: large or fast weight gain, rapid heart heart, dizziness or fainting when you stand up, uncontrollable muscle contractions, any or all abnormal muscle movements, high blood sugar, extreme thirst or hunger, frequent urinating, depression, high blood pressure, thoughts of suicide, feeling restless and breast pain or enlargement in men.

Signs of Allergic Reaction

These, like the serious side effects, require immediate medical attention. Signs of an allergic reaction include swelling of the lips, mouth, face or throat, itching, rash, hives and problems breathing or swallowing.

Rare Side Effects

According to eMedTV.com, these side effects occur in less than 2 percent of those taking Risperdal. While they may be effects of Risperdal, it is possible they can be side effects of another drug or medical condition. They include nightmares, leg cramping, canker sores, pneumonia, increased or decreased sweating, high triglyceride level, anemia, flatulence (gas), GERD, asthma and hair loss.
