Like any type of mental health problem, bipolar disease can cause many daily struggles. Characterized by episodes of extreme happiness followed by periods of severe depression, it's difficult to function with moods fluctuating wildly and no "in-between" moods. Fortunately, bipolar disease can be treated so that symptoms are successfully managed--and you can also take steps to make dealing with bipolar disorder a little easier on yourself.
Step 1
Follow your doctor's recommended treatment plan. The best way to really deal with bipolar disorder is to seek treatment--and follow the treatment plan. Treatment typically involves a combination of medications (including antidepressants and mood stabilizers) and psychotherapy, says the National Institute of Mental Health.
Step 2
Seek additional counseling. Psychotherapy treatment often focuses on changing thoughts and behaviors to treat bipolar disorder, but additional counseling may help you deal with the experience. Try working with a mental health professional to talk about your illness, the challenges that you face living with it, how it impacts your relationships with others and more to help you figure out how to cope with the difficulties of bipolar disorder.
Step 3
Avoid triggers for your bipolar episodes. Certain factors can spark a manic or depressive episode--but if you know what they are, you can take action to avoid them. Keep stress under control and minimize arguments and strained relationships, suggests Rotary International.
Step 4
Take care of your body. Focus on better health inside and out to help cope with bipolar disorder. Start an exercise routine and try to get some physical activity each day. Eat healthy foods and avoid too much fat, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and tobacco products. Also, make sure you get plenty of sleep each night--changes in your sleep schedule can trigger bipolar episodes, according to Rotary.
Step 5
Treat yourself to some relaxation. Make time for activities that you enjoy--it will help you to de-stress and cope with your illness. Whether it's a movie, reading a good book or heading out for a long walk on a nice day, remember to relax and find time for fun.
Step 6
Write about what you're feeling. Sometimes the struggles that you face are too difficult to say out loud--or you are nervous to say them to someone. Keep a journal or diary where you write down what you're going through--both the good and the bad. Your journal can be your own private escape and outlet when you're feeling frustrated, frightened or confused.
Tips and Warnings
- If you still feel like you are struggling with bipolar disorder and can't manage your symptoms, talk to your doctor about other ways to treat the disease.
