Hawaii is an paradise for those who enjoy outdoor activities, which can give a big boost to weight-loss efforts. Whether you live in Hawaii or are simply visiting, there are many things you can do to burn off calories while you have a great time exploring. Use the state's mild weather, oceans, mountains and gorgeous national parks as an excuse to get moving, and you'll likely see your excess pounds fly off.

Step 1

Put on a bathing suit and head to the beach. Spend time snorkeling, surfing or simply swimming. Of the three, you will burn the most calories swimming -- over 500 an hour.

Step 2

Go hiking on one of the many nature trails located on every island. Spend 45 minutes climbing to the top of Diamond Head on Oahu, and you'll be greeted with an astounding view of the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu. Walking uphill at 3.5 miles an hour will burn over 400 calories.

Step 3

Volunteer to help maintain one of Hawaii's beautiful national parks. Establish a routine and go to the park on a regular basis -- you'll break sedentary habits while burning off the fat.

Step 4

Attend a hula halau -- a dance school that teaches hula -- and learn the dance. Be a hit at luaus, where instead of eating roasted pork, you'll be working off your potbelly.

Tips and Warnings

  • Drink plenty of water while you're outdoors to prevent dehydration and facilitate weight loss. Water can help control your appetite, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Eat healthy foods, avoiding refined carbohydrates, as these can contribute to blood sugar fluctuations and weight gain. Limit your food intake to 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day. Keep in mind that you will need to burn 3,500 more calories than you eat in order to lose 1 lb. of fat.
  • Hawaii's beaches can have strong rip currents. Engage in water activities only if you're a strong swimmer or there's a lifeguard on duty.
