It takes more than just eating right to make up a healthy lifestyle. Being healthy involves psychological, emotional and physical health, and it does not need to be complicated. There are many small things you can do to make big changes and create a healthy lifestyle. Talking to your health care provider about ways you can improve your health can also help; your doctor may be able to provide resources that can guide you on your path to wellness.
Step 1
Reduce your stress as much as possible. Practice yoga, do deep breathing and spend time with friends and loved ones. If the stress is too overwhelming, talking to a professional counselor can help provide you with tools to manage stress. The body responds to stress by making hormones; these hormones can cause blood sugar, heart rate and blood pressure to rise, and long-term exposure to stress can cause illness.
Step 2
Exercise regularly. The Mayo Clinic states that regular exercise helps you manage weight, can boost your mood, may reduce your cholesterol levels, relieves insomnia and can increase your energy levels. Even just a regular 30 minute walk can provide health benefits.
Step 3
Eat a healthy, balanced diet. The American Heart Association recommends a diet high in fruits, vegetables and whole-grains. Consume alcohol in moderation, and if you eat meat, choose lean meats over fatty meats.
Step 4
Quit using tobacco products, and try to avoid exposure to these products. Quitting can be hard; talk to your health care provider about tools that can help you stop smoking.
Step 5
See your health care provider for regular checkups. Preventive care can help catch problems early, when there is a better chance of curing disease or having a better outcome.
