Pearl tea is also known as bubble tea, boba tea or tapioca tea. The sweet beverage originated in Taiwan but is now common in many areas of the world.
Caloric Value
According to My Fitness Pal, the caloric count of a generic pearl tea is approximately 160 for a 12 once drink. For bubble tea with milk and sugar or honey the calories can reach over 300 for a single drink.
Ingredients
The basic ingredients in pearl tea are black or green tea and starchy gelatinous "bubbles" of tapioca. There are variations of pearl tea, however, which generally depend on the addition of such items as milk, sugar and fruit syrups.
Popularity
Bubble tea kiosks now abound in American malls as their popularity as risen to rival that of coffee shops. Drinking pearl tea is a trend particularly enjoyed by teens and college students. Many enjoy the unique proposition of both drinking and chewing their beverage but diet conscious folks should be wary. Canoe Health reports that, though tea is a low calorie itself, the addition of milk and sweeteners can make the beverage more like a dessert than a drink.
