NBC's The Biggest Loser is a televised weight loss competition where contestants compete against one another to see who can lose the most weight. During each season, contestants leave their homes and move into The Biggest Loser Ranch. While there, they must adhere to an eating plan and exercise regimen with the help of two fitness and weight loss experts, Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels.
Set Goals
Goals are essential in any weight loss plan. Sure, you need to have a long-term goal, but Biggest Loser trainer Bob Harper recommends starting small. Set a two-week goal for yourself, and journal your progress. You will find that reaching your ultimate long-term goal is not as difficult if you take a series of smaller steps to it.
Have a Plan
The Biggest Loser Diet utilizes white boards so dieters can set daily goals and write out a plan for achieving those goals. Set your weight loss goals, then plan your menu and plan your workout. Just the act of writing out the goals you have for yourself helps keep you motivated and on track.
Get the Right Support
Support from friends or family goes a long way, but only if they understand and fully support your weight loss goals. Commonly friends and family may also be apart of the problem. Weight problems tend to run in families. One spouse may undermine the weight loss attempts of the other spouse. If you feel that those closest to you are not as supportive as you need them to be, find allies elsewhere. Personal trainers, a work-out buddy at the gym and online support groups all keep you motivated and moving in the right direction.
Fail-Proof Your Pantry
Participants on the television show travel to "the ranch" for their weight loss journey. They are completely removed from their normal environment, which is likely filled with everyday temptations. Dieters at home do not have this luxury. However, you can eliminate much, if not all, of the diet busters found on your pantry shelves. By purging your pantry and not purchasing junk food items at the store, you can eliminate the ability to snack without a plan.
Keep healthy munchies that you like on hand. If you do not like grapes, it does not make sense to buy them. Keep snacks you enjoy, like fruit, yogurt, nuts and low-fat granola on hand for when you crave sweets. Eating vegetables, like carrots dipped in low-fat dressing, helps when you want a crunchy snack.
Forget Perfection
Biggest Loser Club nutrition expert Greg Hottinger, RD, wants dieters to forget about eating a perfect diet. He says that eating right 90 percent of the time will help you achieve your goals at a steady pace while allowing you indulgences that you enjoy.
