Snacking helps you remain active and alert between breakfast, lunch and dinner. However, not all snacks are good for you. Choose snacks from fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy drinks to supply your body with nutrients. Stay away from soda, chips and other kinds of junk food, which do not provide you with real nutrition.

Energy Boost

Healthy snacks can provide you with a much-needed boost in energy between meals. Whole grains such as cereals and bread contain complex carbohydrates that provide your body with a sustained energy boost. By contrast, candy bars only give you a temporary boost that will quickly fade and leave you feeling low on energy. Whole grains need not be bland or boring -- mix dried cranberries and nuts with oatmeal to enhance its flavor, the American Dietetic Association suggests.

Reduced Sugar and Fat Intake

Healthy snacks such as fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products can satisfy your hunger while reducing the amount of sugar and fat in your diet. Consuming a lot of French fries and sweets may satisfy your craving temporarily, but these foods also contain high amounts of fat and sugar. Celery sticks topped with low-fat cheese or peanut butter make a healthier snack.

Regulates Weight

Snacking on healthy food such as fruits, low-fat dairy and vegetables is also an effective way to manage weight. The next time you feel the need to snack, try dipping freshly sliced apples in low-fat yogurt, the American Dietetic Association suggests. Apples are a great source of fiber and vitamins, while yogurt is calcium- and protein-rich. Consuming a healthy snack high in fiber and protein fills you up and reduces the probability of overeating at meals.

Sates Hunger Pangs Between Meals

Snacks such as baked tortilla chips or fat-free yogurt can ease hunger pangs while still promoting good health, KidsHeath.org says. Keep healthy snacks interesting through both variety and creative combination. Instead of eating fruit or yogurt separately, try layering them in a parfait glass and sprinkling some homemade granola on top, the American Dietetic Association suggests.

Source of Vitamins and Minerals

Healthy snacks are great sources of vitamins and minerals. Fruits and vegetables supply fiber, as well as minerals and vitamins your body needs, such as vitamins A, B and C. Whole grains provide you with a rich source of fiber and complex carbohydrates. Low-fat dairy products such as cheese and yogurt are good sources of calcium and protein.
