Homemade Freestanding Chin-Up Bar

Any upper body work out is not complete with out a focus on the biceps. One of the best workouts for this muscle group is the chin-up. A good thing about chin-ups is that you can do them virtually everywhere. To do them in your home, you can place a bar in your home gym. Building your own chin-up bar is easy to do and will provide you with a way to build your muscles

Step 1

Use the stud finder to find beams in the ceiling. A stud finder finds beams by measuring density in a wall and giving a notification when the density changes. Make marks on the ceiling where two studs are located next teach other.

Step 2

Place the piece of 2-by-4 over the marks on the ceiling. Screw the 2-by-4 into the ceiling beams.

Step 3

Attach the 90-degree threaded joints to the ends of the bar.

Step 4

Screw the mounting caps to the ends of the 90-degree joints. Make sure that the mounting caps are on tightly.

Step 5

Screw the mounting caps to the 2-by-4 beam. Use at least three screws in each cap.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you would like to attach this to a door frame, attach the mounting panels directly to the bar an screw the bar into the door frame.
  • You must screw this into the beams of the house. Otherwise, it may not hold your weight and can cause injury.

Things You'll Need

  • A 2-inch bar which is approximately 3 feet long
  • Stud finder
  • Pencil
  • One 4-foot piece of 2-by-4
  • Two 90 degree threaded pipe joints
  • Two mounting plates
  • Drill with screwdriver bit
  • Wood screws
