Both Motrin and Midol are well-known medications utilized for their ability to treat pain. Motrin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is utilized to treat fever, aches and pains related to illness, headaches or toothaches. Midol is a medication used primarily to treat symptoms related to menstrual and premenstrual syndrome, such as pain, bloating and discomfort. Each contains various active ingredients in order to relieve pain and other symptoms.
Motrin: Active Ingredients
The active ingredient in Motrin is ibuprofen, which is present in 200 mg in each tablet. Ibuprofen is an NSAID that reduces hormones that cause inflammation or pain in the body. This medication is used to treat fever, pain, inflammation, back pain, arthritis, menstrual cramps or minor injury.
Motrin: Inactive Ingredients
Other inactive ingredients found in Motrin include carnauba wax, collidal silicon dioxide, corn starch, FD&C yellow #6, hypromellose, iron oxide, magnesium stearate, polydextrose, polyethylene glycol, pregelatinized starch, propylene glycol, shellac, stearic acid and titanium dioxide. Many of these ingredients are those used in creating the medication's outer shell coating.
Midol: Active Ingredients
The active ingredients in Midol often vary based on the type purchased. These types range from Midol Extended Relief, Midol for teens, Midol PM and Midol Menstrual Complete.
Midol Menstrual Complete contains acetaminophen (to treat pain); caffeine; and pyrilamine maleate (which helps to reduce bloating and cramping). Midol Extended Relief uses naproxen sodium (a pain reliever). The teen formula contain acetaminophen and pamabrom (a diuretic used to reduce bloating). Midol Cramps and Body Aches features the active ingredient ibuprofen (a pain reliever).
Midol: Inactive Ingredients
Ingredients contained within Midol that do not directly alleviate symptoms include colloidal silicon dioxide, dibasic calcium phosphate, hydroxyproplycellulose, hypromoellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium starch glycolate, stearic acid and titanium dioxide. Like Motrin, many of these ingredients are used in the production of the capsule.
