When visiting Mexico, you'll find there are plenty of opportunities to gain weight. Margaritas, tacos and lounging on the beach are just a few of the pitfalls you may encounter. Mexico also can be an excellent place to lose weight, however. Many Mexicans live a healthy lifestyle, and you can too while you're there. You'll find plenty of fresh, low-fat food to eat along with activities that you can do to get the body you want.

Step 1

Walk everywhere you can, and take buses when you need to. Burn more than 400 calories walking at 3.5 miles per hour uphill. Visit picturesque towns, such as Guanajuato or Tabasco, where you can stroll the hills while enjoying the scenery.

Step 2

Take advantage of the many open-air markets that sell a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. You will get plenty of fiber, which can help you to feel full longer. Make these the basis of your meals, and you're likely to lose weight as you gain nutrients.

Step 3

Overlook street vendors unless they are selling fruit. Avoid the fried churros, greasy pork tacos and caramel candies that can negate all the walking you've been doing.

Step 4

Count your calories, just as you would in any locale. Lose weight by taking in fewer calories than you expend. You'll need to burn 3,500 calories through exercise and diet for each pound that you lose.

Tips and Warnings

  • Take a pass on the tortillas. A diet rich in tortillas can pack on the pounds. Be aware that 1 kg is equal to 2.2 lbs. Knowing this comes in handy when you are buying fresh fruits and vegetables. A healthy meal for when you're on the go -- which you will be much on the time in Mexico -- is roasted chicken. In many Mexican cities, you can find shops that will wrap one up for you within minutes. Peel off the skin and enjoy with a piece of fresh fruit. Take advantage of Mexico's beautiful beaches and go swimming or snorkeling -- the more active you are, the more weight you are likely to lose.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables in purified water before eating them or you may lose weight from a bad case of diarrhea.
