Although nothing is better for fat loss than adhering to a calorie reduced diet and increasing exercise, supplements can play a critical role in how much fat you lose. Evidence hints that taking the right supplements, ones backed by science, can enhance weight loss by increasing calorie burning and the use of fat for energy. Consult your health care provider before taking any supplements.

Calcium

Increasing your calcium intake might boost weight loss, according to a study conducted by lead author Michael Zemel and colleagues from the University of Tennessee. They investigated the impact of increasing calcium intake on a calorie reduced diet. The report, which was published in the February 2004 issue of the journal "Obesity," revealed that obese subjects following a high calcium diet with 800 mg of calcium supplementation for 24 weeks lost a greater amount of body fat compared to those following a standard calcium diet supplemented with a placebo.

Caffeine Anhydrous

In addition to providing alertness and energy, caffeine might also help raise the metabolism and induce fat loss. Allan Astrup led a team of researchers from Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Denmark who examined the effects of caffeine consumption on metabolism in healthy adults. They found that caffeine increases energy expenditure, or calorie burning, in a dose dependent matter. Thus, 200 mg of caffeine increased calorie burning more than 100 mg of caffeine and 300 mg more than 200 mg, according to research reported in the May 1990 issue of the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition."

Green Tea Extract

Green tea is a rich of antioxidants called catechins, which might have positive effects on weight loss, according to a study conducted by researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in China. Scientists performed a review of clinical studies regarding green tea's ability to increase fat loss. The report, which was published in the winter 2006 issue of the "Journal of Medicinal Food," concluded that green tea catechins boosts fat loss by elevating norepinephrine, a hormone that regulates the metabolism and enhances fat burning.
