Losing weight can be difficult, and if it becomes too much of a struggle you may turn to your doctor for help. Injections of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is one procedure that he could recommend for weight loss and to help reset your metabolism. It's not a long-term solution, however. You'll only receive injections for a few weeks. Afterward, you'll have to make diet and lifestyle adjustments that will help you keep the weight off.

The HCG Program

You'll only receive the HCG hormone injections for 40 days, but could lose between 25 and 45 pounds during that time. While on the injections, your hypothalamus gland will release stored fat to be used by your body, but it's vital to restrict the number of calories you consume each day in order to maximize weight loss, according to "Anti-Aging Therapeutics, Volume 12," published in 2010. While you're taking injections, your doctor will prescribe a diet that directs you to consume between 500 and 800 calories each day. Your body will use calories from the released fat to make up for the reduction in calories you consume. Your doctor will also recommend a strict diet, one that doesn't include carbohydrates. Three servings of protein, fruit, salad and two to three cups of vegetables each day are the foods you'll be allowed to eat. The reduced caloric intake will also mean only participating in light exercise -- no more strenuous than walking -- for 30 minutes a day while receiving HCG injections.

Increase Your Caloric Intake

It may sound counterintuitive, but you'll need to increase your caloric intake to keep the weight off after HCG. That's because if you continue to consume 800 calories or less without the injections, your body could assume you're starving and shift into fat-storing mode. You can calculate the number of calories you should start consuming after HCG by multiplying your weight by 13. For instance, a woman who weighs 125 pounds would want to take in 1,625 calories each day to maintain her weight loss.

Ease Back Into a Normal Diet

Once you're finished with the HCG injections, your doctor will guide you as you gradually start putting complex carbohydrates back into your diet. Your weight will be tracked closely while you begin adding foods that you'd been avoiding while on HCG. If any cause weight gain, your doctor will advise against them again for a few weeks. It may take up to nine months for your metabolism to reset completely -- considered the "maintenance phase" -- so you can eat normally again without gaining weight.

Get Active

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that regular physical activity is vital for maintaining a healthy weight. This is especially true after the HCG injections have stopped and you increase your calories. You'll need 75 minutes of vigorous exercise or 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week to help keep you from gaining the weight back. This can be split up in whatever manner fits best with your lifestyle, although working out at least three days each week is the recommendation. Include both cardio and resistance training exercises. Activities such as brisk walking and biking at a relaxed pace are considered moderate aerobic exercise. If you want to perform more vigorous exercises, consider jogging or running, swimming laps, jumping rope or even rollerblading.
