There may be several differences between the all-male gym and all-female gym. Though there are a few gyms that offer membership to male-only customers, many coed gyms tend to be considered male gyms due the vast male customer base and the amount of equipment that is made specifically for men.

Exercise Machines

One significant difference between the all-female gym and the all-male gym is the equipment. While all-female gyms tend to provide equipment that specifically targets the body parts that women are concerned with, coed and male gyms generally provide equipment that is more suitable for the male body. For example, a woman's gym is more likely to carry adductor and abductor machines that focus on exercises for the outer and inner thighs. It is also common that seat adjustment settings may be different on various exercise machines. With male gyms, seats and adjustments are typically designed for longer legs and range of motion.

Atmosphere

Another difference between male and female gyms is the gym atmosphere. In most all-female health clubs, there is more of a sense of camaraderie and support amongst the members. The all-female gym atmosphere also tends to be more focused due to lack of distraction from the opposite sex. The male-dominated gym atmosphere may contain more of a competitive atmosphere. Some male gyms contain body builders and serious athletes who have intense workout regimens. This could be good if you are motivated by seeing others work hard.

Pricing

The pricing structure for membership of each club may differ slightly. Although many women-only gyms try to make the membership affordable, watch for hidden fees, such as annual or administrative fees, added into the cost. Some all-women gyms may also offer certain memberships without the group classes included, so be sure to ask questions about the inclusiveness of your plan. Both the male and female gyms will generally offer some type of free trial offer.

Group Class Offering

The classes that each gym may offer are also different. Many male and coed gym offer a wider variety of classes available to both sexes, including toning and sculpting to varying levels of cardiovascular-focused classes. An all-female gym may offer classes more targeted to women. It is not uncommon to find cardio-dance aerobics, or a mother-and-child fitness class offered in an all-female gym.
