Renal calculi or kidney stones are solid masses of tiny crystals made from calcium oxalate, uric acid, or cysteine. They are formed in the kidneys and ureter when the urine contains excess of these substances. Severe, sudden pain along with fever, nausea and vomiting are common symptoms of renal calculi. Treatment, which may involve medications and surgery, depends upon the type and size of the stone. Some herbs may help naturally treat renal calculi but always consult a doctor before taking any herbs to avoid possible drug interactions and adverse reactions.

Citrus Juices

Drinking citrus juices such as lemon juice and orange juice, according to Mayo Clinic, helps reduce the levels of calcium in the urine, thereby reducing the risk of renal calculi. However, there is no scientific evidence to prove this conclusively and excess intake of these juices can lead to acidity.

Cranberry

University of Maryland Medical Center recommends 300 to 400mg of cranberry extract obtained from the fruits of cranberry, or Vaccinium macrocarpon plant, to maintain kidney health. Unsweetened cranberry juice may also be helpful to many people because of its antioxidant properties. Cranberry juice is generally safe to use. However, it is best to talk to a doctor before taking excess of cranberry juice as it may lead to upset stomach and diarrhea.

Nuts

Powder prepared by grinding a whole walnut and consuming 1 teaspoon in the morning and one in the evening for a month may help relieve the symptoms of renal calculi, says Home Remedies. Eating 3 to 4 almonds every morning for a month may have similar results. People with severe pain may soak the almonds overnight, peel them and then grind them with rose petals to form a paste that should be taken with cold milk to get relief.

Tea

Mayo Clinic also states that women who drink green tea or black tea may have a lower risk of developing kidney stones. However, some teas contain high amounts of oxalate in them and may worsen the condition in people prone to oxalate stones.

Goldenrod

Dried stems, leaves and flowers of goldenrod, or Solidago canadensis, can promote proper functioning of urinary tract and also help dissolve kidney stones. University of Maryland Medical Center recommends drinking 3 cups of goldenrod tea prepared by brewing 2 to 3 tsp. of the herb in 1 cup of water and letting it stand for 10 to 15 minutes. Heartburn is the most common side effect of goldenrod. As with any herb, consult a physician before using it.

Crouch Grass

Crouch grass is a weed that is native to Europe and North America. An extract prepared from the roots of crouch grass, according to Natural News.com, can partially dissolve kidney stones and relieve the pain associated with it. Drug interactions and adverse reactions of crouch grass have not yet been identified and hence, it should not be used without talking to a doctor.
