Cellulite is the fat deposit under the surface of the skin that commonly affects the hips, thighs and buttocks, and leads to a dimpled appearance. Genes, poor diet, hormonal changes, dehydration and reduced metabolic rate are the major contributing factors to cellulite. Although many individuals seek treatment for it, most physicians do not consider cellulite as a problem. In fact, there is no cure for cellulite but regular exercising, avoiding cigarettes and alcohol, and drinking sufficient amount of water can help manage the condition. Certain foods may also help lower the cellulite.
Lean Proteins
Lean and very lean proteins are foods that contain less than 55 calories and 1 to 3 grams of fat in them. Lean protein foods such as turkey, chicken, salmon, pulses, nuts and skimmed milk help stimulate the production of collagen that connects skin to the underlying fat, says dermatologist Howard Murad in a May 2010 article published in "The Sunday Times." The collagen fibers may, in turn, help prevent the bulge that is commonly associated with cellulite.
Antioxidants
The New Living Magazine also recommends fruits and vegetables as part of anti-cellulite diet because they are rich sources of antioxidants and vitamins. Vitamin C, obtained from citrus fruits, berries, green peppers and cantaloupes, and vitamin E found in corn, nuts and olives are the main antioxidants that help manage cellulite by preventing the free radical mediated damage of skin cells.
Lecithin
According to the book "The Cellulite Solution," lecithin is a fatty substance that helps repair and rebuild body cells including skin cells and thereby, may help manage cellulite by hiding the underlying fat. Eggs, soy, cauliflower, oranges, potatoes, spinach and tomatoes are good sources of lecithin and should be part of any anti-cellulite diet.
Caffeine
Caffeine helps remove excess water from the cells and may temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite. In fact, Planet Green states that caffeine is a part of several anti-cellulite products. However, eating and drinking caffeinated products such as coffee and chocolates may have side effects such as dizziness, irritability and nervousness. Talk to doctor if you experience any adverse reactions due to caffeine.
Water
Maintaining sufficient amounts of water, according to the book "The Cellulite Solution," helps maintain healthy skin cells and may help reduce the appearance of cellulite. The amount of water depends upon the extent of dehydration and thirst levels of each individual.
